I am certain there has to be something more reliable on the market. However, I do not live in an extremely cold climate (Virginia) & have been very disappointed that the de-icer barely works, even at 30 degrees. After a winter of watching the birds struggle to break the ice in my very small bird bath, I decided to spend the money & purchase this particular ice eliminator. The reason for this particular item was due mainly to the positive reviews. Perhaps I received a faulty item, but it is a waste of money to pay return shipping & only receive a partial refund.
So far it's kept a 12" diameter, 2" deep dish thawed at 8F. We got this to keep a terracotta dish thawed for the birds and squirrels and it works pretty well. The only minor issue is that this must be covered by about 1/2"-1" of water to function, if the water evaporates and the top is exposed all the heat goes in to the air and the dish freezes over pretty quickly.
It's worked beautifully. Purchased this for our birdbath to keep it open throughout the winter. Our temps have been well below zero at times and the birds are still able to get a drink (or bathe if they're crazy enough).
The answer: there used to be a female and I saw how they interacted. He said to say thanks for making such a great product. Okay, perhaps my answer to them is a little more coarse but I wouldn't want that description published. Just as advertised. I think he was just a little too amorous. People often ask how I know he's a male.
All the kittens have been trapped and adopted and Mom disappeared. Works great. I actually use it to keep water deiced for an outside feral cat. Use your imagination.
I would highly recommend this product. I liked the idea it was only 50 watts. Since moving here in 2005 I have been able to occasionally dump out the ice and add fresh water but not this year. This one got many good reviews and seem to make sense for my needs. I knew the storms were going to be severe as feeder activity was intense. The little buggers went through a lot of seed but thanks to my new heater they had plenty of water available to them during both storms. As I saw my little feathered friend visit my frozen bird bath I realized I needed to fix the problem. I read the reviews on several of their products.
I knew it wouldn't take much to keep some water available and the reviews from even colder areas seem to indicate that this unit would work here. It is a well constructed unit that has performed as advertised. We are having a very hard winter in VA this year. I did a Google and of course Amazon popped up. If you follow the weather you know we just had back to back weekend snowstorms here in the Richmond area.
